What it Means to be a Servant

BEEP BEEP BEEP! Your alarm goes off, it’s Sunday morning. You get ready for church and put on your Sunday best, as you’re getting your coffee you remember you are serving today. You instantly feel drained, but you push it away because serving looks good, its the right thing to do. As you get to church and begin to serve, you start to think “Why am I even doing this?” “Am I really pleasing God?” “Does it matter if I don’t serve?” “Why don’t I see my elders serving?” All these thoughts are normal believe it or not.

I used to think the same way, until I began to go into God’s word and find out what serving really is. I pray that this blog helps you to understand what being a servant really means and why serving is important when it comes to being a Christian.

What does God think about those who serve?

When serving it is easy to think that you are not noticed. It is easy to think that all the glory goes to those on stage but that is not what God says. God says in His word that the most honorable person is the person with a serving heart.

In Luke 22, the apostles begin to argue about which one of them will be the greatest and which one will be honored the most. Jesus stops them and explains to them how kings and men of authority claim to rule over people for the good of the people but in reality they are obsessed with how others see them. This is an example of our culture, in our culture people do not do good deeds if their is nothing in it for them which is the opposite of serving. Serving is taking care of God’s people to purely please God. Jesus continues and explains how the greatest apostol will serve with no honor, he continues to say the most life changing verse…

The greatest honor and authority is reserved for the one who has a serving heart. The leaders who are served are the most important in your eyes, but in the kingdom, it is the servants who lead.

Luke 22:26-27

God sees the servant heart as the heart with the most honor. In Gods eyes you are the leader, you are important and you are seen.

Why should I serve?

Now that you know what God thinks of those who serve, you might be wondering “why should I serve?” The answer is in the word.

“Giving brings a far greater blessing than receiving”

Acts 20:35

From someone who loves serving, this verse is 100% true. When you serve and help build the kingdom of God there is no greater feeling. Knowing you are apart of the team that helped get that person saved is the best feeling. Although serving in Kids Zone or Coffee Shop might seem insignificant, you are important. For those who feel drained when they serve and have been in the season of serving and not leading remember that if serving is below you, leadership is beyond you. Serving is a privilege and not a chore, it is one of the purest ways to show God you love Him and His people. To conclude, I highly encourage you to see serving as a way to love Gods people and as a way to build your kingdom in heaven and if you are ever are having trouble serving think back to Romans 12…

Be enthusiastic to serve the Lord, keeping your passion toward him boiling hot! Radiate with the glow of the Holy Spirit and let him fill you with excitement as you serve him.

Romans 12:11

Prayer

God help me to serve you with a happy heart, remove the vail that is making me see serving as dishonorable. I pray that I will have a passion to serve and remind me Lord that a serving heart is the most honorable in your kingdom, in Jesus name AMEN.
