From Relief to Freedom

This past Sunday, Pastor Matt preached a timely and powerful message that our church needed as we closed out the year. He reminded us of a simple but confronting truth from 1 Samuel 16:23: David’s worship brought relief to King Saul, but it never brought freedom. Saul felt better, yet he remained bound.

Matt summed it up plainly:

“Feeling better is not the same as being free.”

Many believers, he said, settle for spiritual relief instead of pursuing true freedom. Using a powerful illustration, he compared Aleve to Vitamin C. Aleve numbs the pain, but Vitamin C strengthens the immune system and addresses the root. In the same way, many Christians manage symptoms while avoiding the deeper healing Jesus offers.

He challenged us to look beyond surface struggles:

  • Anger often points to unresolved hurt
  • Anxiety reveals fear and control issues
  • Addiction is pain looking for relief
  • Burnout comes from striving instead of surrender

Jesus didn’t come to help us cope—He came to make us whole.

Matt also confronted what he called neutral Christianity—a faith that avoids repentance, holiness, and confrontation. He quoted Leonard Ravenhill:

“Christianity has been watered down until it would neither cure as medicine nor kill as poison.”

Deliverance, he explained, is not about ownership—we belong to Jesus—but about access. Areas of the soul can still give the enemy ground if left unaddressed.

One final reminder stood out: what you feed is what grows. Spiritual growth doesn’t begin with feelings but with obedience. Discipline creates desire.

As we step into a new year, this message was a call to leave neutrality behind and pursue true freedom in Christ—not just relief.
