7 Steps to Renew Your Mind

Vladimir Savchuk Blog 65 Comments

The Apostle Paul said in Romans 12:2 that we are transformed by the renewing of the mind. Many of us think that once our life is transformed, then our mind will be renewed. It is actually the other way around. When we were born, most of us came out of the womb, and into this world, head first. If you want to come out of unpleasant circumstances, limitation in career, stagnation in your ministry, your head has to come out first.

When your mind is changed, your life will be transformed. Remember, where your mind goes, your life follows. Click To Tweet

When you experience deliverance, your mind has to switch from a slave to a son, from a slave to a soldier. Even if you get the same attacks as before, you get to see them from a different position. I like to tell our church, “You are not a sick person trying to get healed, you are healthy person fighting sickness.” “You are not a bound person trying to get free, you are a free person fighting bondage.” “You are not a sinner trying to get holy, you are a saint fighting sin.”

Step 1 Stop waiting for an outside miracle to change your mind. Most of those miracles will never come until you get rid of the chaos in your mind by filling it with God’s Word. Renewing of the mind will never work if someone believes this excuse, “The reason why my mind is so negative is because my life is so hard.” Have you ever thought that maybe the reason your life is so hard is because your mind is so negative? You cannot have miracles in your life, regularly, if your mind is a mess.

Stop making your mind a sidewalk for the Devil to trample on, make it a disciple to the Word of God. Click To Tweet

Do not get me wrong, we need miracles, but they alone do not change our minds without our humility and willingness to make God’s Word the standard for our lives. Remember, the same sun that melts the ice also hardens the clay. Miracles are like that for those who are hungry for God’s Word, miracles help our faith, but for those who are refusing God’s Word to have dominion over their lives, miracles are never enough. If you stop blaming your circumstances for your negative thinking, God will start working on you in a powerful way.

Step 2. Stop believing that you can’t control your thoughts. The second lie that must be repented of is, I cannot control my thoughts, they control me. It is a weak excuse, and this excuse is not Scriptural. The Bible commands us to “Think about these things” (Philippians 4:8), “You shall meditate on it day and night” (Joshua 1:8), “On His law he meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:2).

It is pretty clear that you are expected by God to choose your thoughts, not let your thoughts always be chosen by something else. How do we do this practically? It is true that we get attacked in our minds, because our minds are a battlefield, not a playground. As a Christian begins to connect his spirit with Holy Spirit, his spirit begins to get stronger.

The mind is a servant, either to your spirit or to your flesh. Click To Tweet

When the spirit is weak, the mind runs errands for the flesh by thinking negative thoughts. But when we constantly build our spirit by communion with Holy Spirit, our mind comes under the influence of the Word of God and Holy Spirit who lives in us. We are left with the choice to think on God’s things or let the mind go with the flow of life.

Step 3. What you feed your mind with becomes a mindset. A mindset is impossible to change without changing what your mind is filled with. Typically, when we hear the truth about breaking strongholds or renewing of the mind, we get busy trying to change our mindsets. We quickly learn that it is not an easy task.

A mindset is what controls you. The mind is what you control. Click To Tweet

The only way to change your default and automatic thinking is by filling your conscious mind with new information of God’s truth. Once the conscious mind is filled to the overflow, it slips into the subconscious mind.

Step 4. Confess what you believe, not what you feel. We possess what we confess. We possess salvation by confessing Jesus as Lord of our lives. We possess God’s promises by confessing them with our mouths. When you regularly confess only what you feel and see, you are hurting your faith and not helping negative thoughts to leave.

Don't use your mouth as a thermometer, which only reads the temperature of your current condition, allow God's word to turn your mouth into a thermostat, which changes the temperature of your life by confessing what God says. Click To Tweet

Jesus did that in the wilderness in His temptation with the Devil. Most likely the Devil tempted Jesus as he usually tempts us, with thoughts. Jesus did not think the Scripture to combat the Devil’s arrows, He spoke the Scripture.

Don’t speak what you feel all the time, otherwise your mind can’t change. Learn to speak God’s word instead.

Step 5. Resist negative thoughts, assist positive thoughts. Positive thoughts are not going to stay, they need to be assisted. Negative thoughts are not going to leave, they need to be resisted. We must assist the Word of God by making room for it in our hearts, and resist the evil thoughts of the enemy by taking them captive and bringing them into submission to Christ (see 2 Corinthians 10:5).

The Bible describes the mind as a ship looking for harbor. You cannot keep bad ships from sailing back and forth on the ocean, but you can refuse them from docking privileges in the harbor of your mind. Click To Tweet

You cannot stop birds from flying over your head, but you can stop them from building a nest in your hair. Bad thoughts come, but do not have to stay if we speak against them with the truth of God’s Word.

Step 6. Celebrate the process. It is going to take time to see change in your mind. I think there is a reason why God took six days to create the world instead of one day. He wanted to show us how to go through the process of change.

Each day something great was done and God would end the day by celebrating what was done, instead of complaining about what was still not done. On the third day, when there was still so much work to be done, God saw that it was good. God did not look at what still was unfinished. Much was yet to be done but He celebrated what was complete.

Renewing of the mind happens when we celebrate small victories and focus on what God is doing, instead of what He is not doing. Click To Tweet

Also, it is worthy to note that God never compared the messy process of creation to the beautiful heaven where He resides. The Devil will try to mess up the process of your mind renewal by making you compare your progress with someone else.

You are complete in God. You do not need to compare yourself to others. Comparing leads to complaining. Complaining can lead to breaking the 10th commandment of coveting. Coveting kills the creative process of God in renewing your mind. If your neighbor’s lawn looks greener than yours, start watering your own lawn. Be the best version of you the world has ever seen. Remember, what God started, He is faithful to finish (see Philippians 1:6). He is not done with you yet.

Step 6. Expect miracles. Expecting something good to happen is a choice. It is an act of our faith. A person with a renewed mind has positive expectations in the forefront of their mind. Do not let your imagination create an image in which things will go bad for you, such as sickness worsening, relationships breaking, business failing, etc. Replace those negative imaginations with promises from God’s Word.

Expectations are a breeding place for miracles. Click To Tweet

Some people wake up in the morning with a feeling that something bad is going to happen to them that day. If that happens to you, it is from the Devil. Go back to bed and wake up again until you have a positive feeling that God is good and He plans good things.

If you keep getting bad thoughts that something will happen and they do, you are releasing your faith for your own trouble. I choose to trust in God and expect His grace and mercy, not accidents, tickets, or all hell breaking loose.

Does that mean we will never have bad days? No! But we will not live expecting them.

“Precious Holy Spirit, You are hovering over my life right now. All I can see is darkness, all I can feel is void in my life. I accept Your word as the final authority in my life. I ask that You will take the information from the Bible and make it a revelation in my heart. Oh, Holy Spirit, bring the manifestation of God’s Word into my life. Let my reality rise to the level of Your truth.

  1. Such a timely post! I’ve been listening to Dr. Caroline Leaf about the mind-brain connection and her teaching coincide with this post. It’s so true that we can only go as far as our minds take us. I like how you explained the seven practical steps to simplify the mind renewal process.

    1. Thank you for sharing. Yes Dr Carolina Leaf’s teaching are powerful about renewing of the mind. Feel free to share the link in the comment.

        1. Thanks very much for touching me and my wife for letting us know in detail how to renew our mind we will spread this same information to other a lot of Christian needed to know these vital step to obtain god in us

      1. Thank you for your service. I was having a conversation with my 15 yr old granddaughter about positive thinking and how to renew her mind by reading God’s word daily. We prayed that God would reveal his word to her and found this on the internet, it completely changed her disposition. She started ministering to me about what she was reading in your article. God is amazing.

      2. I’m amos kumar from india. I heartly thank you for this message paster sir. As I’m from Christian family. but I m so negative in all my fields. And I always read Bible and praying to Jesus to renew my mind. But when I saw your msg on Google. now I’m clear how to come out from negative thoughts. I thanks Jesus for your ministry. You are helping to many youth to how to come out from negative mind. May Jesus bless and grow your ministry❤🙏🙏

    2. I have been struggling with severely disturbing thoughts for more than a year. I know that God loves me, I know he is there for me but I still deeply struggle with evil, terrible thoughts against the one who loves me the most! They are vile and something I never imagined would cross my mind about our loving creator. It really makes me feel horrible, sometimes I feel like I’m not even in the faith because these thoughts are crossing my mind. I think to myself, how can someone who truly loves God have these disgusting thoughts. They are so debilitating. They wear me down and exhaust me. I can’t stand them and I want them gone so bad. I just can’t seem to get rid of them. I’ve tried and tried and I’m so tired. 😭 But I can’t bare the thought of giving up. I want a renewed mind so bad, it is the deepest desire of my heart. With that all being said, I’m thankful to have come across this article. I have just about come back to it every day since God led me to it. It it’s really comforting. There are a lot of good points. The fact that I am responsible and have denied the fact that I can change the thoughts is very eye opening and so hard to hear. I am guilty of complaining that I can’t do it. I am so thankful for the truth in this and in God’s Word. God Bless you and all who view. I don’t wish this on anyone.

      1. I am oddly relieved to read your comment, as I am struggling with the same thing. Nearly a decade of addictions and an unbridled brain etc. have wired my brain to be weak and think of awful things, but please know that you are not alone. A good thing to remember that God is bigger than your thoughts, and God is not your thoughts (even any negative thought about God is not God, He is bigger than that!). God can speak to us, but if we have a terrible thought it is of the enemy and not God. Cut off any source to negativity (most media today, social, tv, etc.), take communion every day, have elders in your church pray for you, and most importantly read the word every single day. Eventually your brain will have the word in your subconscious and not the filth that seems to return to it. I’m repenting every day and asking God to give me strength. it seems like a lot of steps but I have not given up hope! God bless you

        1. I encourage you to also ask for prayers from healthy God focused friends & churches. There are call centers of trustworthy bible based organizations that & are there to pray w/ you. Philippians 1:21 – For to me to live [is] Christ, and to die [is] gain.

        1. God bless you for reminding me of these scriptures (GOD’S WORDS).
PLEASE pray with and for me so that these words will forever be stamped in and on my mind and help me to apply them to my daily thoughts and life.

      3. Put on the armor of God !! Ephesians 6:10-17 open your Bible daily .. read it out loud and rebuke the devil with Gods word.. Fight soldier !!
God has never left you !!
        🙏🏻🙌🏼📖🔥⚔️🛡 ✝️😇

      4. You become stronger the more you stop allowing those thoughts to stay and replace them and every time I get negitve thoughts I say okay the enemy is trying to destroy me So I start praying for others to come to Christ if the devil speaks pray to lord for salvation for others every thought he throws at me is soul ill pray for so I have noticed less evil thoughts come to my mind let then enemy know God going to working hard to save sombody he’s has.Fight back by sending prayers for the lost.I also when I’m filling low start thanking God and praising him and put my head phone in and listen to worship music. When I’m down praise to God lifts me back up.

      5. Hello Kirsten,
        I will pray for you.
Try some really good worship and praise music/Brooklyn Tabernacle choir that emphasizes the powerful Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Be also mindful of what your eyegates and eargates are taking in, especially on tv and media.
If at all possible try to get the audible bible to play throughout your house or on earbuds.
Whenever possible read your bible aloud. Whether you understand or not.
The Bible says Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.
I recommend a book by Iris Delgado titled
Satan, You Cant Have My Promises

        Psalm 56:8-
God says Kirsten I love you and I am saving every tear you shed

        Hebrews 13:5-
God says, Kristen I will never leave you nor forsake you, no matter what the enemy tries to make you think

        In Romans 8:37-
God says, No, in ALL things Kirsten you are more than a conqueror

      6. Heýy sont be scared,i think u have blasphemous thoughts dont fear them its a lie from the devil trying to keep you away from God ,he wants to make you feel as if you are the only one suffering from this, the fact that you hate these thoughts shows that they are not yours its an attack, pray to God and read your bible daily ,be diligent,I once had them ,it was so disturbing ,I used to pray and say God I cant lived with such thoughts its better you take my life…..
But its the lie from the pit of hell dont allow it,dont run away from God,unstead run to Hkm He is your father, tell him everything God loves you,wen i had negative thoughts thoughts about God I even got to a point where I feared the bible ,I disnt want to see It,I didnt want to be around people who talk about God,i used to tremble when I hear His name, the devil even lied to me and said God Himself will kill me for blaspheming agains him,my life was filled with fear and I was so hopeless, you know I thought I was the worst pesron on earth ,but then one dayI sat down and came to think of all the prayers and good thing that God was doing in my life, then I asked my self that can God really keep on blessing and answering prayers of a person who such thoughts about Him,can He favour someone whom He wants to kill…..
Thats when i realised I have been believing lies all along,,I took my bible though I was scared I stated reading it and I found all the truth,nw my mind is free ,though those those still try to come but I quickly speak the word of God in faith and they just go unoticed so dont be afraid pray to God he will deliver you trust me I have been there and having these thoughts has drawn me closer to God like never before….

      7. Wow I feel your pain and how debilitating those blasphemous thoughts can feel 😭 it’s horrible! And I’ve been wondering if anyone has ever even experienced what I have been… I pray for complete breakthrough and freedom over these thoughts in your mind the Name of Jesus, I cover you in the blood of Jesus and pray for strength upon strength and a multiplication of peace, grace and mercy into your life!
But in that coming day no weapon turned against you will succeed. You will silence every voice raised up to accuse you. These benefits are enjoyed by the servants of the LORD; their vindication will come from me. I, the LORD, have spoken! Isaiah 54:17

      8. Also do NOT allow the enemy to isolate you, keep reaching out for support in you communities, friends and parents! And something that changed my life is being God aware vs being self aware, whenever you feel a certain way start proclaiming who God is, because all of Him is sufficient for you

      9. Je suis profondément édifié par la puissance derrière ces vérités si simple. Je suis en Côte d’Ivoire et je ne peux que benir Dieu pour votre vie

  2. I have been struggling with this for a long time. I wake up in the morning with dreading feelings that my day is not going to get any better, even if I go to sleep happy, I still wake up worried. Thank you for this timely post!!

  3. Great post, your writing looks great by the way. As a teacher I always refer to this topic with my students. In the Educational Arena, we call in “Growth Mindset” while in Scientific study and research, it is refer to as “Neuroplasticity.” I agree with you, we can not cast out mindsets or expect miracles to renew our mind. We must feed our minds and spirits the Word of God. I also agree “positive confession brings promise possession” and that is possession of all God’s promises.

  4. Thank you Pastor Vlad… This is an encouraging and beautiful message on how to renew our mind… So helpful so insightful…

  5. I was surfing the YouTube on a video teaching that can touch my situation as to the battle of the mind am talking with respect to my addiction on masturbations, I watch your video on how to overcome lust but I was blessed, I felt the presence of the Lord inside me.
Your articles on renewing your Mind also blessed my life, I need more of your prayers cos I know I have the grace of God in my life but am battling with lust.
    God bless you, pst.

    1. This post hits home 😞,I’m newly baptized and is struggling with porn addiction.I continue to pray but still fall short…my mind is full of sexual thoughts ,I fight daily to overcome the strong hold but is failing…even if I manage to withhold from watching, my mind however still occupies them.

      1. Proverbs 6 16 by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil your saved and made new but we must have a awe and reference and respect for God that’s the meaning of the fear of the Lord to be cautious in your walk to say no to sin.As beliver your still going to havd sinful desires but you realize you have turn Its a battle the more you fight and use God word to fight back and trust the Lord you will get stronger and feed your mind with God’s word pray Ask God to Set free over and over again If you have to but use Proverbs 6 16 to overcome porn I say by the fear of the Lord I depart from evil over and over every time I’m tempted. Got to realize porn is evil and it has took down many men and Christan men too God bless and my you over come in Jesus name.

    2. So sending prayers for you Use God’s Word is what I do Proverbs 16 -6 By the fear of the Lord men depart from evil rember God hates lust So its sin and it displeases God So I THINK ABOUT thus verse Comes to my mind It please God when we use his word to defeat the sin we deal with. And giving in to lust opens the door for more lust so you every time you say no its so much easier the next time tell you dont really have that issue as much but still will come just keep fighting it please God when you say no to sin.

  6. Just what I needed. What an awesome post on the practical ways to renew the mind! I think we make it so hard, but this post reminds me of how beautiful it can be. Thank you.

    1. Can relate to what you’re saying. Just what I needed too for the very difficult phase am in now in the renewal of mind. Just so happy too to get some confirmation through this blog that renewing the mind isn’t easy at all.

Thank you so much Pastor Vlad for this very helpful blog!

  7. God is taking me through a journey of mind renewal. Imagine finding a beautiful article on the same subject! I’m just so amazed….to God be the glory!

  8. Pastor Vlad, Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I am currently reading Switch on Your Brian by Dr. Caroline Leaf and everything you said was confirmation. I feel like God led me to your blog to show me that he is listening to my prayers. I actually cried after reading your blog because it brings so much hope!

  9. Come on sir that was tremendous and especially I just felt that the point in which you say to celebrate the process touched me greatly
Thank you so much for sharing these truths with us.

  10. Thank You Pastor Vlad,

I’m very grateful for what God is doing in your life and Ministry.

I always get bless any time I here your message.

    God bless You.

  11. What an awesome message. It has really blessed and opened my eyes of understanding. May our Heavenly Father bless you mightily in Jesus Name.

  12. I’m just flabbergasted!!!! I can’t believe how this spoke so many volumes for me. I’m suffering from every single thing that you mentioned!!! God led me hear. This is so great that I will use this for my daily meditation to change my negative thoughts ….Thank you holy spirit for leading me here and thank you Vlad for such words of wisdom. Amen!

  13. Wow this is well explained.
It indeed takes a Spirit filled person to have such insight.
Thanks Pastor Vlad for expanding this topic and giving such details.
Actually at our church (Firm Foundation Ministries Zambia), Mind Renewal is our April, 2021 theme.

    Thank you once again!

  14. In my sacred time with the Lord this morning, I came across your blog as I searched. What a blessing! God spoke powerfully to my need through your anointed, clear teaching. Facing old age, health challenges, fatigue and loneliness has been a great battle. Thank God for your timely help.

  15. Great blog! I have a question please… You said “The Bible describes the mind as a ship looking for harbor. You cannot keep bad ships from sailing back and forth on the ocean, but you can refuse them from docking privileges in the harbor of your mind.”

I’ve tried to find that but without success. Would you mind sharing that Bible reference?

  16. This is SUCH an amazing post and the best I’ve ever seen this topic laid out. Thank you so much for sharing. I will also be sharing with my clients. God bless!

  17. Was just thinking of Romans 12 when I wanted Mind Renewal. I really like this breakdown. It helps as I have been stuck in a church fellowship that has been stagnant for over a decade. I have voiced my concerns, but it has been very difficult, as I have felt marginalized. We have hope, as we are moving to a new state next year.

  18. I’m truly blessed. I think no evil anymore. I’m free indeed, my mind is free indeed. I av joy cause God loves and cares for me always.

    Thanks so much !
    God bless you !
