God, the devil, and Israel

Sermon by Dr. Michael Brown

The only way to explain Israel and the Jewish people is to look into the spiritual realm for answers. Apostle Paul encourages us in 2 Corinthians 2:11 that we should not be ignorant of the devil’s schemes. Let us be spiritually minded, understand the time we are in, and know what we should do. Don’t just react to the latest trend or whatever you see happening on social media or television. Ask God what He is doing, and how we should respond.

What Does the Word Say About Israel?

God’s Word shows us that even though Israel was in disobedience in the past, they were still loved by God. It is not about Israel’s goodness or faithfulness; it is about God’s. Israel does not stand by performance and obedience, but by the grace of God alone. We should appreciate that, as Christians, not be upset about it.

God’s Child

“You must say to Pharaoh, ‘This is what the LORD has said, “Israel is my son, my firstborn.” (Exodus 4:22)

‘Is not Ephraim my dear son, the child in whom I delight? Though I often speak against him, I still remember him. Therefore my heart yearns for him; I have great compassion for him,’ declares the LORD.” (Jeremiah 31:20)

From God’s perspective

From God’s perspective, the people of Israel are:

  • His Covenant People – (Leviticus 26:44–45)
  • Scattered and Judged, But Preserved to Be Regathered – (Jeremiah 30:11, Jeremiah 31:10)
  • Still Beloved – (Romans 11:28-29)
  • God Will Keep His Promises! – (Jeremiah 32:36–41)

He chose one person on earth in order to bring redemption to the world and He gave promises to these people.

From Satan’s Perspective

He stands opposed to the plan of God and the people of God and wants to destroy them from the earth. The same devil that is inspiring the murder of Christians around the world, also wants to wipe out the Jewish people.

From the Perspective of Israel

We appreciate the privilege and high calling, but sometimes wonder, “Why not choose somebody else?”

There Is No Rational Way to Explain the Existence of the Jewish People

Modern Thinkers On Israel

Jonathan Edwards (1703-1755)
“Besides the prophecies, of the calling of the Jews, we have a remarkable providential seal of the fulfilment of this great event, by a kind of continual miracle, viz. their being preserved as a distinct nation in such a dispersed condition for above sixteen hundred years. The world affords nothing else like it. There is undoubtedly a remarkable hand of providence in it.”

Mark Twain (1835-1910)
“If the statistics are right, the Jew’s [population] constitutes but one per cent of the human race… It suggests a nebulous puff of star dust lost in the blaze of the Milky Way. Properly, the Jew ought hardly to be heard of; but he is heard of, has always been heard of. He is as prominent on the planet as any other people… The Egyptians, the Babylonians and the Persians rose, filled the planet with sound and splendor, then faded to dream-stuff and passed away; the Greeks and Romans followed and made a vast noise, and they were gone… All things are mortal but the Jew; all other forces pass, but he remains. What is the secret of his immortality?”

Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826)
“If I was an atheist and believed in blind eternal fate, I should still believe that fate had ordained the Jews to be the most essential instrument for civilizing the nations… I should believe that chance had ordered the Jews to preserve and propagate to all mankind the doctrine of a supreme, intelligent, wise, almighty Sovereign of the universe, which I believe to be the great essential principle of all morality, and consequently of all civilization.”

John Adams (1735-1826)
“I will insist the Hebrews have [contributed] more to civilize men than any other nation. If I was an atheist of the other sect, who believe, or pretend to believe that all is ordered by chance, I should believe that chance had ordered the Jews to preserve and propagate to all mankind the doctrine of a supreme, intelligent, wise, almighty sovereign of the universe, which I believe to be the great essential principle of all morality, and consequently of all civilization.”

Paul Johnson (1928-2023)
“The survival of the Jews down the ages is a fact unique in human history. No other people, once dispersed, has remained a distinct entity, with a common faith, a common language (albeit archaic), a common literature and a common ethos, for 2,000 years and more.”

There Is No Rational Way to Explain the Modern State of Israel

David Ben-Gurion (1886-1973)
“In Israel, in order to be a realist, you must believe in miracles.”

  • Why Is the World So Concerned with Israel?
  • Why is the whole world chanting “Free Palestine!”?

No concern about Arabs killing Arabs

More than 400,000 casualties in the civil war in Yemen since 2014
More than 600,000 casualties in the civil wars in Syria since 2011
Both nations have been racked with famine and deprivation (with as many as 450,000 civilian deaths combined)

The UN and Israel

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) has historically passed a disproportionately high number of resolutions that condemn or criticize Israel compared to other countries. These resolutions are non-binding but carry symbolic weight.

From 2015 through 2023, the UNGA adopted 154 resolutions against Israel and only 71 against all other countries combined. In 2024 alone, there were 17 resolutions against Israel versus 6 against the rest of the world (e.g., one each on North Korea, Iran, Syria, Myanmar, and Russia’s actions in Georgia and Crimea, plus one on the U.S. embargo against Cuba). Earlier data from 2012–2015 shows 83 resolutions against Israel out of 97 total country-specific condemnations (86%).

Then we’re told today’s Israelis are fake Jews!

First, where did all these “fake Jews” come from, since hundreds of thousands of them were living in the greater Middle East for more than 2,000 years?

Second, if they are fake Jews, why does the world hate them the same way it has hated the “real Jews” for centuries??

Third, if you don’t believe the “real Jews” have a right to the Land, why get so upset about the so-called “fake Jews”?

There Is No Rational Way to Explain Antisemitism
Sigmund Freud, 1938: “With regard to antisemitism I don’t really want to search for explanations; I feel a strong inclination to surrender to my affects in this matter and find myself confirmed in my wholly unscientific belief that mankind on the average and taken by and large are a wretched lot.”

Jews have been accused of:
– Poisoning the wells and causing the Black Death
– Kidnapping and killing Christian children before Passover and using their blood to make matzoh
– Controlling the Vatican
– Starting COVID
– Assassinating Charlie Kirk

And ask yourself . . .

Why do some Christians get so upset when you say that the Jewish people are still chosen for a mission? Unless they are insecure in their own standing with the Lord, why the anger? And is there not enough grace to go around for everyone?

How Then Do We Respond?

1) We recognize that, first and foremost, this is a spiritual battle to be fought with prayer, fasting, and the Word

2) We align ourselves with God and love and what He loves and hate what He hates

3) We educate ourselves and push back against the darkness of lies by speaking the truth with patience and perseverance

4) We demonstrate God’s love to Jew and Muslim alike, to Israelis and Palestinians, as well as to White Supremacists and Black Supremacists, to the Left and to the Right

5) We preach Jesus-Yeshua as the Messiah of Israel and the Savior of the world!
