Lord Give Me a Sign

Hearing the Voice of God

You need to learn what the voice of God sounds like as much as what it doesn’t sound like. One of the main reasons why people do not hear the voice of God today is they believe God doesn’t speak today. As a result of this, you shut off your soul from hearing God.

The second category of people believe that God speaks today, just not to them. I want to tell you today that you can hear the voice of God. Jesus said in John 10 that His sheep hear His voice. If you are a sheep of God, you can hear His voice.

The third category of people who don’t hear God’s voice is those who know God speaks, and that He speaks to them, but they have been ignoring His promptings or are in disobedience. This causes their spiritual ears to grow hard of hearing.

There are also a group of people that are open to hearing from God but they have not been taught how God speaks. Therefore, they stay away.

“Zechariah said to the angel, “How can I be sure this will happen? I’m an old man now, and my wife is also well along in years.” – Luke 1:18 NLT

There Are Three Different Inner Voices

When you hear a voice in your soul, consider these questions in order to better discern the voice.

    1.    God’s voice – is this something God wants for me or wants me to do?

    2.    Demonic voice – is this something that the devil would want for me or want me to do?

    3.    My Soul’s voice – is this something that l want for myself or I desire to do it?

Six Major Ways God Speaks

    1.    Scripture – To know how God speaks now, we need to learn how He spoke before. Scripture is the foundation of all hearing from God.

    2.    People – God uses Pastors, Prophets, leaders, parents, and regular people to speak through. If you would like to sharpen your ability to hear God’s voice, get to be around people who hear God better than you do.

    3.    Senses – a physical prompting in your body, a so-called “gut feeling” or an unease/tension about a certain situation or decision. God also speaks through having peace or the absence of it.

    4.    Signs – Asking for signs can be appropriate when seeking clarity, instruction, or encouragement.

    5.    Visions – God speaks through visions during the day.

    6.    Dreams – God uses dreams to speak to us. The problem we have here is that if we do not believe that God can speak to us through dreams, we will never expect it. I never used to receive such dreams until I educated myself about them and started praying for God to show me dreams. And He did.

Signs

Asking for signs can be appropriate when seeking clarity, direction, or encouragement.

It’s not wrong to seek a sign or confirmation from God, as long as it’s not motivated by disobedience or a lack of faith.

God can use signs to build our faith, especially when we’re learning to hear His voice. When we look through the Old Testament, a sign was one of the most common ways that God communicated or affirmed His Word to His people. God never condemned the asking of a sign, especially when we are learning to hear His voice.

Asking for a sign is more about relational dialogue with God, not about tricks, magic, or formulas.

Signs must be interpreted through scripture, not scripture interpreted through signs.

“But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” Matthew 12:39 NKJV

When it’s Okay to ask for a sign:

  •     You’re genuinely seeking God’s will.
  •     You’re stepping into something that requires faith or risk.
  •     You are already walking in obedience, not waiting on a sign as an excuse to delay.
  •     You’re not trying to test or manipulate God.

When it’s NOT okay to ask for a sign:

  •     You’re delaying obedience while waiting for perfect conditions.
  •     You’re testing God out of doubt, fear, or unbelief. (e.g., Luke 1:18-20 – Zechariah struck mute).
  •     You ignore Scripture, wise counsel, or spiritual peace in favor of “spectacle.”
  •     You’re asking God to prove Himself when He’s already spoken. (e.g., Matt 12:29 – Pharisees were rebuked).

Types of Signs:

  •     Closed or Open doors – Open Door – Paul in Ephesus, (1 Corinthians 16:8–9)
  •     Unusual Coincidences – Burning Bush, (Exodus 3:2–4).
  •     Unusual Circumstances – Jonathan’s Victory Plan, (1 Samuel 14:8–10).
  •     Audible voice of God – Jesus’ Baptism, (Matthew 12:29).
  •     Testimony – Stones for memorial from Jordan, (Joshua 4:4-7).
