There are moments when you look at your life and realize God has been so faithful, yet something inside still feels stuck. You love Him, you’re walking with Him, but your mind keeps pulling you back into places you thought you left behind. If you’re honest, that inner struggle can feel confusing, because outwardly things look fine, but inwardly there’s a quiet battle going on. This is where many believers live without even realizing it. The issue is not always what’s happening around us, but what has been built within us.
Scripture gives language to this reality. “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds” 2 Corinthians 10:4–5. A stronghold is not just something external. It is a place of confinement in the mind, a pattern of thinking built on lies, reinforced over time, and strengthened through emotions and experiences. And before you know it, that lie starts to feel more real than the truth of God’s Word.
“A stronghold isn’t a demon sitting on your shoulder; it’s a lie sitting in your logic.”
When the Mind Becomes a Fortress
Paul uses the imagery of a fortress, something elevated and fortified, to describe how thoughts can position themselves against the knowledge of God. You see this clearly in the story of Jericho. It wasn’t just a city. It stood in the way of the promise. In the same way, mental strongholds block what God wants to do in your life, and sometimes you don’t notice it right away because it feels normal after a while.
Every stronghold has structure. There are walls, which are lies like “I will never change” or “God has forgotten me.” There are towers, which are arguments that defend those lies and resist correction. And then there are captives, the thoughts and emotions like fear, shame, and rejection that keep you locked inside. The enemy is not just after a moment. He is after your mindset.
How Strongholds Come Down
Freedom does not come randomly. God has given us a clear way to tear these things down, and it often begins in a much simpler place than we expect.
1. Truth
Jesus said, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” John 8:32. Strongholds are built on lies, so they must be destroyed by truth. You cannot remove a lie without replacing it, and I’ve had to remind myself of this more than once when old thoughts tried to resurface. Freedom starts when truth becomes louder than the lie.
2. Persistent Obedience
This is where many people struggle, because it doesn’t happen instantly. The Israelites walked around Jericho day after day before anything changed. In the same way, strongholds are built over time, and they are broken over time. Consistency is how we cooperate with truth, even on the days when it feels like nothing is happening.
3. Power of the Holy Spirit
Truth reveals the lie. Obedience weakens the lie. But the Holy Spirit destroys the lie. There comes a moment where God moves in a way you cannot manufacture, and what once felt immovable begins to collapse. You can feel stuck for a season, and then suddenly realize something has shifted inside you.
4. Taking Thoughts Captive
“Bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ” 2 Corinthians 10:5. You are not your thoughts. You can notice them, challenge them, and lead them to truth. If you don’t lead your mind, it will lead you, and it doesn’t take long to see where that road goes.
Walking in Real Freedom
Before, your thoughts were prisoners of lies. Now, they can become servants of Christ. And this is something you walk out daily, not perfectly, but faithfully. If you stay with the process, even when it feels slow, you’ll begin to notice the shift. Thoughts that once controlled you start to lose their grip, and truth begins to feel more natural than the lies ever did.
God is not only interested in setting you free. He is committed to teaching you how to live free. And as you keep walking with Him, step by step, those walls that once felt permanent will begin to fall.
