In today’s world, spirituality is often separated from truth but in the life of a believer, spirituality is not abstract or mystical; it is rooted in the person of Jesus and shaped by His Word. And if you’re honest, many of us have felt the gap between knowing about God and actually walking closely with Him.
In the days of Jesus, discipleship was not a new concept. Young Jewish boys would grow up memorizing Scripture, and only the best of the best would follow a rabbi closely, learning his way of life. What’s striking is that Jesus stepped into that culture and chose ordinary people. Fishermen, tax collectors, people who didn’t make the cut. Before you realize it, you begin to see that “Jesus was not looking for perfect people, He was looking for willing followers.”
What It Really Means to Be a Disciple
To be a disciple in that time meant three simple but demanding things. You were with your rabbi, you became like your rabbi, and eventually you did what your rabbi did. That was the goal. It wasn’t casual, and it wasn’t part-time. And if we’re honest, our modern version of Christianity can feel much lighter than that, sometimes reduced to moments instead of a lifestyle.
Jesus never created two levels of Christianity. There was no category for casual believers and then a higher tier for serious disciples. There was only one invitation, and it was to follow Him fully. That can sound intense at first, but it’s actually where life begins to make sense.
Christianity is not a ticket to heaven. It is a birth into a new life, and life naturally grows.
The Three Dimensions of Following Jesus
Discipleship is not complicated, it has three parts that work together.
First, it is being with Jesus. This is your relationship with Him, not just in a quiet time but throughout your day. It’s learning to stay aware of Him even in ordinary moments, and sometimes you don’t notice how much this changes you until you look back.
Second, it is becoming like Jesus. He said, “Learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble.” He didn’t point to His power first but to His character. That means the goal is not just spiritual activity but real transformation on the inside.
Third, it is doing what Jesus did. This includes serving, loving people, and being used by God. It goes beyond tasks and into a lifestyle where your life reflects His.
Why Balance Matters
These three areas must stay together. When one is missing, things begin to drift. Some people focus only on being with God but withdraw from others. Others focus only on inner change and become overly critical. And some stay busy serving but slowly lose their connection with Jesus, and it can sneak up on you.
But when all three are present, there is health. You are grounded, growing, and useful at the same time. This is the kind of life Jesus invites us into.
A Better Way to Live
Jesus said His yoke is easy and His burden is light. That means the way He teaches us to live is not meant to exhaust us. Many of us are tired not because we are following Jesus too closely, but because we are carrying things He never asked us to carry.
At the end of the day, the goal is simple. Become a better follower of Jesus, grow into a better human being, and live as someone who serves others. Titles will come and go, but a life with Jesus lasts.
