Beginners Guide to Fasting

Beginners Guide to Fasting

HowToDoStuff Blog 33 Comments

Everyone of importance in the Bible practiced fasting: Moses, David, Elijah, Esther, Daniel, Anna, Paul, Jesus, just to name a few. When Jesus taught on fasting, He would say “When you fast” not “If you fast”. He assumed that we would fast. We were created with fasting, think about it, if you sleep 8 hours a day, then you are sleeping 1/3 of your life. If you live, say, 75 years, that’s 25 years asleep, or 9,125 days. When you sleep, you are fasting, that’s why morning meal is called breakfast – its when you break your fast.

Fasting is abstaining from food for spiritual reasons. Click To Tweet

1. Helps us overcome the calamities of life.
Fasting is the Biblical way to humble ourselves (Psalm 35:13; 69:10). Esther fasted when faced with danger (Esther 4:16). Ezra fasted for protection (Ezra 8:21-28). Jehoshaphat fasted in the time of the invasion of the confederated armies of Canaanites and Syrians (2 Chronicles 20:3).
2. Renews our connection with God.
Jesus said that His disciples will fast when He is gone (Mark 2:20). When we fast, we get our hunger back for the presence of God.
3. Empowers us to fulfill God’s calling in our life.
Most of the people in the OT fasted in a crisis; Jesus fasted for His calling. We should not fast only during problems, but also for our purpose. Anna was fasting for the coming of the redemption of Israel. (Luke 2:37).
4. Defeats the devil.
Once, the disciples of Jesus could not cast out a demon. Jesus said, This kind does not leave, but by prayer and fasting (Matthew 17:21). Fasting helps to break the bonds of wickedness, undo heavy burdens, and empower us to break every yoke (Isaiah 58:6).

1. Start With a Clear Goal.
Be specific. Why are you fasting? Do you need direction, healing, restoration of your marriage or family issues? Are you facing financial difficulties? Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance.

2. Preparing Spiritually.
Confess your sins to God. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal areas of weakness. Forgive all who have offended you and ask forgiveness from those you may have offended. Surrender your life fully to Jesus Christ and reject the worldly desires that try to hinder you (Romans 12:1-2).

3. Deciding What to Fast.
The type of fasting you choose is up to you. You could go on a full fast in which you only drink liquids, or you may desire to fast like Daniel, who abstained from sweets and meats, and the only liquid he drank was water. Remember to replace that time with prayer and Bible study.

4. Deciding How Long.
You may fast as long as you like. Most can easily fast from one to three days, but you may feel the grace to go longer, even as much as 21 to 40 days. Use wisdom and pray for guidance. Beginners are advised to start slow.

5. What to Expect.
When you fast, your body detoxifies and eliminates toxins from your system. This can cause mild discomfort such as headaches and irritability during withdrawal from caffeine and sugars. And naturally, you will have hunger pains. Limit your activity and exercise moderately. Take time to rest. Fasting brings about miraculous results. You are following Jesus’ example when you fast. Spend time listening to praise and worship. Pray as often as you can throughout the day. Get away from the normal distractions as much as possible and keep your heart and mindset
on seeking God’s face.
6. How to End.
Don’t overeat when the time comes to end your fast. Begin eating solid food gradually; eat small portions or snacks.

    1. Fasting is a discipline. It’s not easy but with Christ it’s possible. Also, it’s wise to fast NOT SO FAST meaning to start slow and build. Start from one day, and then go to 3 days after some time. Be blessed.

      1. Fasting is to find G-D and let earthly things go,and personally enjoy one with our G-D , Daniel did fast by eating nuts, fruit and drink water, G-D approved this.Known as the Daniel fast.I spend 24 /7 with my G-D and Jesus, My sabbath is Saturday, all
my foods fixed for when my fast is over around nine thirty to night.Today I am fasting to thank G_D for being with me in body and soul for 69 years of my life, some of my younger days he was there and I didn’t even knew he existed.Have a blessed day.

  1. Thank you so much for the spiritual nourishment. May God Bless You, the Group Pastors and your families. I have always wanted to fast. I am taking medication for blood pressure and heartburn – acidity. Recently was also taking medication for Arthritis and amoeba but now am through. Waiting for check up. Can I still fast?

    1. When it comes to blood pressure, its best that you consult your doctor before fasting. He can tell you how long you should fast and if you should fast at all. If he says you can’t then you can abstain from other things then food. It’s sacrifice God honors.

  2. This is a wonderful gift of learning on how to start fasting and to be in prayer! ! Yes I have seen people who were fasting but then after it is done ( after breaking the fast) that person would be irratable on simple things….. as a child and a teenager I was wondering why these people fast …. on those days I used to be extra careful, but the situation would be the same….. I simply hated these fasting prayers . Only when I started this as an adult did I realise that what it is to be truthful in fasting. Asking God not of material things but to guide us in this world of diverse faiths to be just and truthful! !!! I still am a biginner in fasting and praying at my age .

  3. What about washing ur face and annoiting ur head with oil when u start. This will be my first time fasting but that’s the only part I have questions about is annoiting.

    1. That’s what I do. I have a personal bottle of anointing oil that I use, that i bought at a Christian bookstore. I usually put a dab on my forehead or place a small amount on whatever body part i need healed.

Also, I usually just do a fast, no water, no food. I’m surprised this article didn’t have that choice here but I guess I shouldn’t have expected it being that this is a beginner fasting article.

      1. Wow, no water either! I have done days with just water, but to not have anything at all seems dangerous since you can easily go into dehydration. How long have you went without water?

  4. Thank you for explaining in detail about the topic, Fasting. I never really knew how to do it spiritually but this helped me so much.

  5. Thank You for explaining about fasting here Pastor.very helpful.I am the one who interested to Join with you 3 days fasting.

  6. Wow found this so helpful!! Thanks pastor Vlad, God put a thought in me to fast and made me get this at the right moment to prepare for it!!

  7. I do not fast as often as I should but every year from Dec 26th to Dec 31st (6 days) I fast (water only). I started because I figured if the Bible tells us to it’s God’s will & we as believers are to do as he asked. The first fast was for 7 days. I was able to get off all my depression meds & my body & mind truly healed. My husband said it saved “us”. I’m thankful that God laid it on my heart to fast. Since the first fast I’ve knocked it down to 6 days instead of the 7 days. I pray that in 2021 grow spiritually closer to God & fast more.

My issue with fasting is that when I fast my family knows. No one is supposed to know when you’re fasting but I can’t fast without them knowing.

  8. I will start my fast on Monday. It will be my first time but I feel the timing is perfect. Will do a 28 day fruit and veggie fast and only water. My brother is a pastor and he recomended it to me. He and his wife do a yearly fast for 28 days. I need an answer from God about my future and I hope the fasting will draw me close enough to hear His answer.. I pray the answer is not no. I have been praying for the past year and still not a clear reply.

  9. So, I have a question and I also would like to fast with you, you set the date or I do up to you. The question is, when I fast is it ill advised to smoke or vape? Thanks.

  10. I really love that you take us through the steps from beginning to end on how to fast and what that tangibly looks like. Most people like myself at times don’t know if I’m fasting correctly or are there do’s and don’ts. Thanks Pastor Vlad

  11. My father just died. My mother is now widowed and vulnersble. My eldest sister has moved in and has been controlling her and her finances since. My mother has asked me to help her as she is scared. It’s heart breaking. My sister claims to be a Christian, but her works show otherwise. I have prayed and decided to begin fasting for 10 days with no food, only water. Please pray to God with me for knowledge, guidence and strength. God bless.

  12. I’m going to start a small Daniel fast tomorrow Friday November 5th to Sunday November 7th pray for me and if anyone would like to join me then go ahead I pray for you all! 🙏
